Fantastic Musical Experience

Post from PK (ganshono / News Desk):
On May 30th, 2010 evening there was an opportunity to only thirty people who witnessed a rare musical experience. Mr AK Ray Chowdhury in his residence at AC-76, Salt Lake invited Charoibeti, formerly known as “40-Up” a music group to perform their activities.

40-Up was formed by Parimal Ray in the year 2002. The name was so coined to signify the age group of its members. In a later phase they included some young artists like Tridib, Rittik and Tapas to enrich the group’s performance but the new members were below 40 years of age. And it was necessary to renaming as “CHAROIBETI” that bears a meaning “Move Ahead”. At present Parimal, Alok, Subhasish, Rittik and Tapas are the members of this unit.

Their first performance was “Om The Message of Peace”. The composition had three different moods – Starting with vocal chant in a legato form having a rich harmony backup on keyboard created a beautiful ambience; it then slowly transformed to a medium movement accompanied by beats on tabla and finally reached a fast movement which was a symbol of joy. It was really a sensible ensemble.

A total of eight compositions they presented and each piece of work was highly appreciated by the audience.

“Krishna Meets Christ” was a new type of composition as they said. The famous Irish Piece “Auld Lang Sine” was the backbone of this composition. It was then slowly called a tune of “Kirtana” within it. The piece was played mostly in an improvised manner.

Recent trend of world music is to fusing some basic chords or rhythm progression only. Charoibeti tries to work on basic melody line of any Western piece which can be supplemented by Indian Ragas, no doubt a very tough task.
